The winemaker

The history of Champagne Philipponnat and its terroir

It is now five centuries that the Philipponnat family has been working the Champagne soil. The lands of Aÿ were the cradle of the family as early as 1522, with Apvril le Philipponnat, the first owner of vines at a place called "Le Léon", between Aÿ and Dizy.

His descendants became in turn winegrowers and merchants. Today, the Champagne Philipponnat house still uses the 18th century cellars of the Château de Mareuil. The house has also expanded, with the acquisition of the Clos des Goisses, a very special hillside in the Champagne region.

In Champagne, "gois" means "sloping". The Clos des Goisses, which covers 5.5 hectares, has a 45° slope. It is the hottest terroir in the region: facing south, it is never shaded and its vines take advantage of its chalk soil to produce exceptional grapes.

The Champagne Philipponnat estate extends over the communes of Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d'Or, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Mutigny.

Respect for the vine and traditions in the cultivation of Champagne Philipponnat grapes

The ancestral terroirs of Champagne Philipponnat are treated with the greatest deference. The soils are worked naturally, with hand weeding and plowing led by draft horses.

The solera principle

Philipponnat Champagnes have adopted the principle of solera under wood. It consists of keeping the reserve wines in oak barrels, before reintroducing them into the non-vintage blend. The proportion is one quarter to one third. This blend serves as the reserve wine for the next blend.

This process aims to preserve in each bottle the trace of the vintages assembled since the origin. This know-how is transmitted from generation to generation.

Philipponnat Champagnes

The grapes used for the elaboration of Champagne Philipponnat are in great majority from the Premiers and Grands Crus. They are harvested at maturity to take full advantage of their aromatic richness.

Royale Réserve

Champagne Philipponnat's Royale Réserve cuvée is available in brut, non-dosed and rosé. It is elaborated with a majority of Pinot noir, from Premiers and Grands Crus. The Royale Réserve champagnes are complex, always fresh, with an original mineral note.

Vintage

The Vintages of Philipponnat Champagnes have in common an elegant vinosity. They are available in Blanc de Noirs, Grand Blanc and Sublime Réserve Sec.

The 1522 Cuvée

Cuvée 1522 commemorates the birth year of Champagnes Philipponnat. Plain or rosé, the cuvée is composed of Grands Crus only and is vinified in wood. It is the most accomplished cuvée. It is complex, but always balanced.

Le clos des Goisses

The steepest and sunniest clos deserves its own cuvee. It is a unique, fresh and round wine for a vintage of great prestige.
