Domaine Alzipratu

3.5
(11 customer reviews)
Since 1969, the Alzipratu estate has been producing fine and balanced wines in the upper Corsican region of the Calvi PDO. This family estate was created by Maurice Acquaviva in 1968, who joined forces with the Baron de La Grange, owner of the Alzipratu convent. The property has been managed by his son Pierre Acquaviva since 1991, and he became the owner of the estate in 1992. The initial vineyard covered 16 hectares, and today it is made up of 40 hectares of vines spread over three communes: Calenzana, Zilia and Moncale. Find out more

The winemaker

The Winery

Located at the foot of Monte Grossu, but also a few minutes from the Mediterranean coast, the wine estate benefits from a double influence of mountain and sea. The sea air and the proximity of the Mediterranean bring a strong sunshine, when the neighboring reliefs favor regular rainfall and a humidity favorable to the good growth of the vine. The soils are mainly made up of various colluviums and granitic arenas

The methods of cultivation privilege the respect of the environment and the soil. The estate is in the process of converting to organic viticulture.

The grape varieties

The domain has a varied planting, with essentially typically Corsican island grape varieties and old grape varieties. Thus, we find a majority of Niellucciu, a black Italian grape variety often planted in Corsica, which allows to elaborate fine wines with a fruity aromatic bouquet with notes of spices, maquis flowers and coffee.

The estate also has native Corsican grape varieties, including Sciaccarellu, Biancu Gentile, Minustellu and Aleaticu, but also Vermentinu a grape variety producing exceptional white wines, as well as Grenache and Syrah, grape varieties widely grown around the Mediterranean.

The wines

The estate offers a range of 11 wines in the three colors in the Calvi wine appellation. The reds are made from Niellucciu, Grenache and Sciaccarellu, grape varieties with a racy character that offer fine and elegant wines marked by aromas of red fruits and pepper.

The estate's rosés are authentic terroir wines and Alzipratu also offers Calvi white wines that are both powerful and sweet with gourmet notes, made from a blend of Vermentinu and Bianco Gentile.

Pumonte rosé is a fresh and delicate wine, with notes of roses and citrus. The cuvée also comes in white with Pumonte blanc, a salty and greedy wine, made from 100% vermentinu with aromas of citron and white peach. Finally Pumonte red is an intense and fruity red wine. The palate offers a beautiful complexity, both generous and fine, with tannins present, but velvety and supple.

FiumeSeccu is also offered in all three colors. FiumeSeccu white is a very balanced mineral wine offering an aromatic bouquet that blends almond, apple and white flowers. The FiumeSeccu rosé is a fine wine with fruity aromas of red fruits and grapefruit, made with equal parts Sciaccarellu, Niellucciu and Grenache. FiumeSeccu red is for its part a wine on the fruit, crisp, with a spicy note.
