The winemaker

The history of the Coume Del Mas estate

The first vintage of Domaine Coume Del Mas was born in 2001, created by Nathalie and Philippe Gard, an agronomist specializing in terroirs. Philippe, after studies in Montpellier and experiences in Burgundy and Bordeaux, created Coume Del Mas on a schist territory and decided to work this sloping terroir where no mechanization is possible.

The couple built the estate with the acquisition of plots in the communes of Banyuls sur Mer and Collioure, in order to work on the elaboration of these two queen appellations of Roussillon.

Today, Nathalie and Philippe Gard cultivate 14 hectares of vines, divided into 32 parcels. The estate is located in the hamlet of Cosprons, between Banyuls sur Mer and Port Vendres.

The Coume Del Mas estate vineyard

The vineyard of the Coume Del Mas estate knows great differences between the plots perched at 380 meters above sea level and those that plunge into the Mediterranean. These vertiginous slopes force an entirely manual exploitation, because mechanization is made impossible by the too steep inclinations.

This is how the Coume Del Mas estate is run with respect for the terroir and nature, with sustainable agriculture. It produces an average of 35,000 bottles per year. Two thirds of the vines are red and the rest are white. The average age of the vines is 30 years.

The grape varieties for the red wine are 60% Grenache Noir, 15% Mourvèdre, 15% Carignan and 10% Syrah. The grape varieties for the white wine are 85% Grenache Gris, 5% Roussanne, 5% Vermentino and 5% Grenache Blanc.

The wines of Domaine Coume Del Mas

Coume Del Mas red - Banyuls

The red Coume Del Mas belonging to the Banyuls appellation is composed entirely of Grenache. Its color is ruby red, with tiled reflections. The nose is powerful, imbued with aromas of nuts, candied fruits and cigar.

The mouth is powerful and structured. It is round, with fruity flavors, full of red fruits and candied fruits. The finish is long and appreciable. Coume Del Mas Banyuls is best enjoyed with grilled meats and cheese platters made with old Comté and Tomme des montagnes.

Coume Del Mas white - Folio

The Coume Del Mas white Folio is composed by a blend of 90% Grenache Gris and 10% Grenache Blanc. It belongs to the Collioure appellation. The wine has a pale yellow color. The nose is full of aromas of white fruits and white flowers, accompanied by notes of anise.

The palate is ample and generous, tinged with mineral notes that linger throughout the finish. Folio de la Coume Del Mas pairs well with chicken with morels, bouillabaisse or asparagus.
