The winemaker

In 2004, renowned composer Rob Dougan set himself a daring challenge: to found an exceptional wine estate in the heart of the Terrasses du Larzac. This artist, a stranger to the world of wine, settled in the Hérault region (his wife, Karine, was born in Montpellier) to reveal the potential of a terroir that had yet to be discovered. In just a few years, La Pèira has established itself as a true Languedoc grand cru - many observers even consider it "the most exciting estate in Languedoc" according to Robert Parker, and Jeb Dunnuck (Wine Advocate) ranks it "arguably among the best estates in all of France". Such critical acclaim, rarely seen for a young estate, is a testament to the founder's vision. The name La Pèira (which means "the stone" in Occitan) expresses both the identity of the place and the wines that come from it - deep wines, rooted in their terroir, and marked by the quiet power of stone. It also comes from an Occitan mason's proverb: "plaçar una pèira en damaisèla" - literally, to place a stone as a damsel (with its most beautiful face to the outside) - which embodies the estate's desire to extract from nature the quintessence of what it has to offer. Terroir and vineyard. La Pèira extends over some 15 hectares between the communes of Jonquières and Saint-André-de-Sangonis (Sainte-Brigite area), at the foot of the Larzac plateau. The vines, clinging to ancient alluvial terraces, sink their roots into Quaternary clay-limestone gravel soils. The proximity of the Causse du Larzac, which rises to almost 800 meters, tempers the Mediterranean climate: the temperature difference between day and night - with particularly cool nights - prolongs ripening and preserves the elegance and freshness of the wines. This microclimate, combined with the complex geology of the Terrasses du Larzac (mosaic of limestone, clay, sand and volcanic deposits), forges a unique terroir. La Pèira grows a wide range of grape varieties adapted to this high-altitude terroir: Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Carignan for the reds, and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, Grenache blanc and Clairette blanche for the white plots. The vines - some of which are old and low-yielding - are cultivated using traditional methods: moderate ploughing, no superfluous inputs, manual harvesting and meticulous grape sorting. The winemaking philosophy aims to magnify fruit and place of origin rather than transform them: careful parcel-by-parcel fermentation, measured ageing (in vats or French oak barrels) and precise blending. This respectful approach captures the soul of the terroir in every bottle, while endowing the wines with remarkable balance and depth. Benoît Dreyer comes from a long and unbroken line of family winegrowers in Alsace, dating back to the 16th century. However, in a career once considered extraordinary, but now less rare, he has also explored the world of wine, with experiences ranging from Angélus in Saint-Émilion to Artadi in Rioja, and trips as far afield as Mendoza and McLaren Vale, to Aragón in Spain and Sonoma in California.
