The winemaker

The history of Domaine Gauby

The story of Domaine Gauby is that of a rugby player (who played internationally) Gérard Gauby, who was passionate about growing vines. He owned 3 hectares of them, 20 kilometers northwest of Perpignan, and decided to go into winemaking, rather than continuing to sell his grapes.

Two generations later, it was his grandson, also named Gérard, and his wife Ghislaine, who developed Domaine Gauby from the 1990s onwards. Their son Lionel then took up the torch.

The Domaine Gauby vineyard

Domaine Gauby's terroir lends itself wonderfully to vine-growing. Although very close to Perpignan, it's nestled in the heart of the region's unspoilt wilderness. The valleys are arid and steep. The vineyards are part of a landscape of oak forests and garrigues.

Calce's climate is warm, but the vines are often battered and cooled by winds from the nearby sea. The highly varied soil is made up of vertical strata. The roots of the vines weave between them to plunge as deep as possible into the soil to draw the water and nutrients needed for berry growth.

The Gauby estate covers over 84 hectares, including 44 hectares of vines and 40 hectares of meadows and forests, making it one of the largest in Roussillon. The red wine vineyard covers 29 hectares. Grape varieties are Grenache noir (45%), Syrah (28%), Mourvèdre (11%), Carignan (10%), Cinsault (3%), Cabernet franc (2%) and Aramon (1%).

Plantings for white wine represent 15 hectares, with Grenache Blanc (29%), Macabeu (28%), Muscat à petits grains blancs (18%), Grenache gris (10%), Chardonnay (9%), Vermentino (3%), Tourbat (2%) and Muscat d'Alexandrie (1%). Domaine Gauby produces an average of 80,000 bottles a year.

Domaine Gauby wines

Les Calcinaires - blanc appellation Côtes Catalanes

Les Calcinaires white wine is a blend of Chardonnay, Macabeu, Grenache Blanc and Vermentino. It is a very subtle wine, with a beautiful aromatic complexity. Rich and dense, the nose reveals very fresh notes of green apple, pineapple, orange blossom and dried herbs. The palate is equally fresh. Its acidic structure is imbued with hints of menthol.

Côtes Catalanes - Vieilles Vignes - red

The Vieilles Vignes range belonging to the Côtes Catalanes appellation is the product of a blend of Grenache, Carignan, Syrah and Mourvèdre. This is a highly concentrated wine. It is complex and powerful, with a bloody, spicy nose. Notes of very ripe fruit dominate the scents of green tea, pepper and garrigue herbs. The palate is full-bodied and well-balanced, with notes of coffee adding to the red fruit. Well-balanced tannins contribute to the wine's masterful structure.
