The winemaker

The Monplézy estate is built on the foundation of sincerity and character

The Sutra de Germa-Gil family now counts four generations of winemakers. The estate was founded in 1920 by Jean Sutra de Germa, a wine merchant from Béziers. The Gil family arrived from Spain in the 40s, and Michel Gil bought 3 hectares of vines out of a passion for wine. The two families bonded and the estate grew over the years. It remains renowned for its character and commitment to the winegrowing cause. In 2000, Anne and Christian decided to convert the estate to organic farming. Benoît and Margot, their children, soon joined the business. The estate remains true to its essence, respecting nature and sharing. The winemakers welcome woofers during the harvest to share their knowledge and experience of the vineyard.

The Monplézy estate farms its land with passion

The estate sits atop the Puech de Monplézy, a hill that forms the last extension of the Causses. The 30 hectares of vines are planted on poor soils, ready to give the best of themselves. The hard limestone and clay-limestone soils bring out the spicy aromas of the estate's different grape varieties. The gravelly red marl hillsides and terraced Villafranchian soil are ideal for the development of high-quality production. The winemakers' policy is to do most of the work in the vineyard and let the grapes express themselves in the cellar. The estate is classified as a Natura 2000 zone. A member of the Ligue Protectrice des Oiseaux, it has chosen the Madagascar hoopoe as its symbol. This migratory bird is particularly at home on the hillside, which has been pesticide-free for over 10 years.

The Monplézy estate and its production of local wines

The domaine produces 14 original cuvées using organic farming methods. The family winemakers demonstrate their creativity every year. The AOC Languedoc-Pézenas and IGP Côtes de Thongue wines have a fine, harmonious expression. Michel Gil's grandfather's old carignan and marsanne bring a minerality to the wine. Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah bring terroir aromas such as laurel, black olives, juniper and pine resin.
