The winemaker
History
Although vines in this region were planted centuries ago, the Piquemal estate is very recent. In the 1970s, Pierre Piquemal took over the land from his two grandfathers and immediately set about rebuilding the estate (regrouping parcels, preserving old vines, etc.). This is a family estate that has remained true to the winegrowing tradition.
In those years, Pierre began to reorganize the estate, changing the methods he used. This was a period marked by the boom in sweet wines, and many winemakers took advantage of this commercial success. But Pierre and his wife Annie decided otherwise, and became winegrowers in their own right. It wasn't the easiest path, but it was the management of the vineyard, the wine and the business that kept them passionate throughout their adventure.
The commercial beginnings were just as difficult, as this winemaking couple had to make a name for themselves and get their wines talked about at trade shows. Our protagonists spent a lot of time at competitions. Today, they are rewarded for the energy they have put into Domaine Piquemal, now recognized in France and abroad as one of the region's standard-bearers.
The new generation
Today, it's another generation with Marie-Pierre Piquemal who has taken over the reins of the estate. In the heart of Roussillon, the family estate extends over 48 hectares. Perched on the slopes of the Agly Valley, the vines benefit from optimal conditions for producing wonderful grapes. Little rain and constant sunshine help the grapes to reach optimum ripeness.
Planted on an impressive diversity of soils, made up of schist and clay, the vineyard's many grape varieties (Vermentino, Macabeu, Grenache, etc.) have been chosen for their adaptability to the terroir. With an average age of 35 years, the vines are cultivated with great respect for the environment. Agro-ecological practices have been implemented and enabled Domaine Piquemal to obtain HVE certification in 2017.
The range of wines is extensive, with AOCs, vins de pays and vins doux. The winemaking process is mastered like a masterpiece by our team of winemakers. They harmonize this crucial stage with each plot, to bring out the best in each one. Marie-Pierre and her collaborators use top-quality technical resources (sorting table, termo-regulated vats, etc.) to match their ambitions.
Domaine Piquemal is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding estates in Languedoc Roussillon, with cuvées that not only bring out the best in their terroirs, but also tell a whole story...
