The winemaker

The History of the Pic Saint Loup Hermitage

In the 1950s, Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup was a private winery offering VDQS (appellation d'origine Vin Délimité de Qualité Supérieure), as well as other more diverse wines. The cellar was used more to store and process the sheep's milk from the farm which was used to make Roquefort cheese. In 1951, the village cooperative cellar was created by the son-in-law of the owner of the Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup.

In 1970, the new manager is more interested in wine growing than in sheep. He planted Syrah vines to develop the activity. In 1992, his heirs, the three Ravaille brothers - Jean-Marc, Pierre and Xavier - took over the business and made it a flagship of the Pic Saint Loup appellation.

The Pic Saint Loup Hermitage vineyard

The Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup vineyard is backed by the first foothills of the mountain range. It covers 40 hectares, 30 of which are dedicated to red wine and the last 10 hectares are planted with white. The average age of the vines is 50 years. The average production is 110,000 bottles per year.

The soil is composed of extremely varied terroirs of red earth, pebbles, gravel, clay, hard limestone, soft limestone, conglomerates, dolomites, limestone scree of fluvial origin and marl. The climate is particular, with very marked thermal amplitudes: the days are hot and the nights are cool.

The estate has been certified in organic farming since 2012. It is now entirely conducted in biodynamics. The soils are plowed without using any pesticides. Harvesting is manual and done very early in the morning to take advantage of the freshness and limit the risk of altering the fruit as much as possible.

The wines of Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup

Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup produces red, white and rosé wines.

The Classic Rosé of Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup

Le Classique Rosé sports a clear, brilliant color with warm orange reflections. The nose is full of fruits like pineapple, white peach and citrus. Some floral flavors further enrich the scents emanating from the bottle.

All of these aromas can be found in the mouth, to which are added flavors of licorice and notes of garrigue.

Cuvée Sainte Agnès - white

The Cuvée Sainte Agnès displays a straw yellow color, clear and brilliant. Its nose is bursting with flavors: hawthorn, white flowers, dried fruit, orange zest, pistachio, lychee, peach and honey.

The palate is ample and fresh, with a beautiful finish, all in length, which allows to still enjoy the incredible cocktail of flavors of the Cuvée Sainte Agnès.
