Le Soula

4.4
(5 customer reviews)
On the beautiful granite terraces at high altitude in the Fenouillèdes region, northwest of Maury, Gérard Gauby and a few associates have acquired this certified organic estate, which is now run by the conscientious Gerald Stanley. The red and white wines are vinified in barrels according to very natural principles: indigenous yeasts, no acidification, no chaptalization. Find out more

The winemaker

The history of the estate

Importers of Gérard Gauby's Fenouillèdes wines (at the foot of the Pyrenees) to the English market during the 1990s, Roy Richards and Mark Walford eventually joined forces with the winemaker, in order to exploit the vines of the terroir, which benefits from a cooler climate and strong potential in the region.

At the end of the 1990s, the first Soula winery was opened in the Altitude village of Saint Martin de Fenouillet, and by 2001, the estate's red and white wines had begun to earn a reputation they would never lose. In 2008, the winery moved to the former Prugnanes cooperative cellar.

In 2016, Wendy Wilson takes over the management of the Soula team after several winegrowing experiences in the Loire and the United States.

The terroir

Culminating at an altitude of 1,300 m, the terroir benefits from cooler weather than the rest of the region, oscillating between Mediterranean (plain) and mountain (Pyrenees) climates. Most of the vines grow on a granitic subsoil with a granite arena subsoil.

The 22 hectares of vines have been farmed organically from the outset, and have been certified Biodynamic since 2008. In the vineyard, Nature's rhythms are meticulously respected, in particular the lunar rhythms that define the dates of intervention, in the logic of accompanying the terroir and the vine, rather than in a logic of transformation.

10 hectares are planted with white grape varieties (including 4 hectares of Macabeu and 2.5 hectares of Sauvignon), 12 hectares are planted with black grape varieties (including 5 hectares of Carignan, 5 of Syrah and 2 of Grenache).

The wines

The estate has several cuvées, including a vintage one: Soula. The latter comes in red and dry white wines.

The red Soula boasts a ruby-red color and a nose as animal as it is fruity. This nose is enhanced by vegetal touches and a seductive floral freshness. On the palate, the wine is elegant and crisp.

Le Trigone Rouge N°15 offers a brilliant color and a nose as fruity as it is spicy. On the palate, it's quite drinkable and uncomplicated, on freshness and elegance.
