The winemaker

The genesis of the Château l'Hospitalet

Nestled in the Clape massif, at the foot of the Pyrenees, Château l'Hospitalet was born in the 16th century under the impetus of the Hospices de Narbonne, which welcomed pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela, Lourdes or Rome. The vineyard gradually found its place between the olive trees and fruit trees, in the heart of the garrigue. A paradisiacal setting with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean, which led Gérard Bertrand to walk through the door in 2002, and to buy this 1,000 hectare estate, 82 of which are planted with vines.

A domain committed to its terroir

For Gérard Bertrand and his teams, the first step is to understand the terroir: sunshine like nowhere else in France, marine freshness and soils that oscillate between the mineral richness of the marl and the draining and dry side of the limestone. A perfect balance that calls for the production of exceptional wines. To better reflect this unique terroir, biodynamic viticulture was introduced at Château l'Hospitalet in 2013.
This approach to the vine and wine allows the characteristics of the place to be better expressed: no phytosanitary products in the rows or chemical inputs in the cellar, instead, natural preparations that strengthen the plant and encourage it to take deep root in its terroir.
The Hospitalet grapes are therefore unique in the world and produce equally unique wines: a small range with one white and two reds, including the one that was voted Best Red Wine in the World at the International Wine Challenge in 2019.

A gathering place for epicures

Not content with the wine success of l'Hospitalet, Gérard Bertrand also decided to make the château a place for epicureans to live and gather in search of new experiences. He thus revived the estate's long tradition of hospitality by transforming part of it into a hotel complex, with a gastronomic restaurant offer and a strong commitment to the arts.
