The winemaker

The history of Mas d'Espanet

Mas d'Espanet is a relatively recent wine estate, as it was taken over in 1980. The estate is located in a region very favorable to the culture of the vine, between Uzès and Sommières in Languedoc, within the massif of Lens, nestled in the middle of the scrubland. However, the place was left abandoned for a long time until it was bought by Denys Armand.

In 1980, this heir to a long tradition of winegrowers, winemakers and distillers decided to buy the Mas d'Espanet and began to rehabilitate it. After a long period of abandonment, everything had to be rebuilt, both in the vineyard and in the winery.

The renovations are progressive. In 1999, a new level is reached, with the total restoration of the cellar, as well as the transformation of the old sheepfolds into a barrel cellar that allows the vinification of the grape production of the 20 hectares of vines.

The Mas d'Espanet vineyard

The Mas d'Espanet vineyard benefits from two climatic influences on the northeastern border of the Languedoc. The vines benefit from the mistral wind which cleanses them and keeps parasites and diseases away. The rather cold nights are also beneficial for the health of the grapes.

During the restructuring of the Mas d'Espanet vineyard, Denys Armand managed to save some old vines of Languedoc red grape varieties, divided between Carignan, Cinsault and Grenache. The oldest vines are over 50 years old. He also decided to plant white grape varieties: Grenache Blanc and Grenache Gris, Sauvignon, Viognier, Clairette, Picpoul and Chenin.

The estate is run with the greatest respect for nature, with soil work and harvesting that favors manual labor. The yields are controlled according to the grape varieties, in order to concentrate the fruit aromas and bring great freshness to the Mas d'Espanet wines. The interventions in the vineyards are carried out according to the lunar calendar. The grassing is partial in summer and total in winter. The work of mowing is done by the herd of sheep that graze among the vines.

The Mas d'Espanet vineyard holds the organic farming AB certification, as well as the DEMETER label.

The semi-buried cellar allows for vinification by gravity. The vintages are vinified according to their dress. For the red, it is traditional, with maturation in vats and brass tuns. The duration of the macerations is determined by the grape variety, as well as by the cuvée.

The vinification of the whites consists of direct destemming and pressing, followed by vinification and maturation in demi-muids, foudres and amphorae on lees. The rosé is vinified in vats on lees.
