The winemaker

For more than 450,000 years, man has been present on this corner of the earth, where vines thrive. Admittedly, Tautavel man didn't drink wine back then, but pollen analyses carried out in the layers of his habitat have shown that wild vines were already growing on the Tautavel plain. This breathtakingly beautiful valley has an exceptional history dating back to the Stone Age. In 1971, the bones of a human dating back over 450,000 years were discovered in the "Caune de l'Arago" cave overlooking the valley. The discovery of the so-called "Tautavel Man" is now considered a key to understanding the origins of mankind. Several flint tools were found in the cellar and would have been used by the Tautavel man for cutting, washing skins and making fire. The flint was finely carved with incredible precision, and small jewels of prehistoric times, such as stones, can still be found in the vineyards of Tautavel and Vingrau. The flint, a symbol of manual craftsmanship, perfectly reflects the image of the Tautavel winegrower, who today still works his vines essentially by hand. It also symbolizes the importance of terroir in the quality of Tautavel and Vingrau wines.
