The winemaker

The history of Château de Fesles

Château de Fesles was built in the 11th century, atop the fourth highest point in the Loire Valley. Several aristocratic families have lived in the château, each in their own way contributing to the development of its vineyards.

In the 19th century, the Boivin family bought Château de Fesles. They were winemakers and worked hard to expand the vineyard. They improved viticulture and winemaking techniques, while taking particular care in marketing their wine, which helped them forge a solid reputation.

In 1991, when Château de Fesles belonged to Monsieur Gaston Lenôtre, it was completely restored. Since 2008, it has belonged to the Helfrich family.

The Château de Fesles vineyard

The Château de Fesles vineyard covers 48 hectares of vines that stretch around the château itself. The terroir is divided into two main parts:

the hillside planted with Chenin Blanc, which is used to make Anjou Blanc, Coteaux du Layon and Bonnezeaux, the estate's great sweet wine ;

-the plateau planted with Cabernet Franc, used to make Anjou Rouge, Anjou-Villages rouge and Cabernet d'Anjou; and Grolleau, used to make Rosé d'Anjou.

The "La Chapelle" parcel is considered the spearhead of Château de Fesles, as it is the highest quality. Its blue schist and quartz soil favors natural drainage and protects it from frost, while its south-western exposure offers the vines ideal sunshine.

La Chapelle overlooks the Layon river, whose morning fog favors the development of botrytis or "noble rot", which produces highly concentrated grapes. Grapes from the La Chapelle plot are reserved for the production of Bonnezeaux wines. Harvesting at Château de Fesles is carried out by hand, followed by a rigorous table sorting.

The wines of Château de Fesles

Cabernet d'Anjou rosé

Cabernet d'Anjou rosé is 100% Cabernet Franc. It has a soft, salmon-tinged color, sometimes with bright highlights. The nose is fruity, dominated by red fruit flavors. Floral notes are more discreet, but nonetheless present.

The attack on the palate is fresh. Round and fleshy, with good length. Serve chilled, between 8 and 10°C.

Anjou Rouge

Anjou Rouge is made exclusively from Cabernet Franc. It is a deep wine with a sumptuous ruby-red color. The nose is harmonious, rich in aromas of very ripe red berries.

The attack on the palate is robust and very consistent. This fleshy palate remains elegant through the long finish. Serve between 13 and 16°C.
