The winemaker

The history of the Château de Villeneuve

It all began in 1577. The house belonged to the de Villeneuve family. It was intended for the eldest son who was unfortunately killed in battle. It was then the youngest son, Jean-Marie Berthelot de Villeneuve, who took possession. The castle was then remodelled in 1967 by the Foucault and Bossoreil family.

In the 1940s, the house was bombed. The Chevallier family had been winegrowers for three generations and became the owners of the estate in 1969. It was the latter who gave the château its current appearance. It was restored to its original cellars in 1997 and received a brand new winery in 2016.

The vineyard

Built in the 18th century, the estate has a total of 25 hectares of vines, set on predominantly limestone land. The vineyard rests on a limestone base from which the tufa stone was extracted to build the châteaux of the region. The estate has been converted to biodynamic viticulture and makes a delicious dry wine as well as a range of elegant red wines.

The use of chemical fertilisers is forbidden. However, organic fertilisers in accordance with the needs of the vines can be used after soil analysis on different plots. In this vineyard, everything is done to bring a true natural balance in order to elaborate wines while being respectful of the wild fauna and flora.

The wines

At Château de Villeneuve you can find delicious wines, both red and white. 120,000 bottles are produced each year. And marks the minds and taste buds of all amateurs and enthusiasts. Les Vieilles Vignes remains the most famous. If you are looking for a fruity Cabernet Franc, the Clos de la Bienboire is delicious. For a stronger but more traditional aroma, the Domaine will delight you. We look forward to the wines of 2021 to fully enjoy this pure Chenin.
