The winemaker

The history of Clos Rougeard

Until 2017, the Clos Rougeard estate was run by famous winemakers in the region: Jean-Louis and Bernard Foucault, better known as "Charly" and "Nady". Sadly, "Charly", a legendary winemaker to whom the estate owes its letters of nobility, passed away in December 2015.

The estate is run with respect for grapes and traditions. The vines are treated biodynamically, without any weedkillers or pesticides. The Foucault brothers were pioneers in ecological agriculture. As early as 1970, they invested in equipment that enabled them to avoid chemical treatments, while respecting the growth of the vines. The Clos Rougeard estate covers the Bourg - one of the region's most prestigious - Poyeux and Brézé parcels. The wines are named after the parcels from which they are made. Le Clos is the result of a blend of two parcels.

1990, the year of Clos Rougeard

The estate had been in existence for eight generations, when 1990 brought Clos Rougeard wine to the attention of the wine world. That year, at a major Pomerol tasting in Paris, a cuvée of "Clos Rougeard Le Bourg 1990" was discreetly placed among Pétrus, Trotanoy and Le Pin of the same vintage. The competition saw Clos Rougeard win ahead of its rivals, and so the legend was born.

The wonderful wines of Clos Rougeard

Demanding viticultural practices and long maturation periods, lasting from 18 to 30 months, produce wonderful wines, both red and white. Domaine Clos Rougeard produces 20,000 bottles a year, making it a particularly rare wine. It is considered by many renowned oenologists to be the greatest Loire wine ever made. Clos Rougeard blends the richness of Saint Emilion with the subtlety of Burgundy's great Pinot Noirs. This Saumur Champigny has a finesse that will delight tables in France and around the world.

Red wine from Clos Rougeard: Le Clos

Clos Rougeard Saumur Champigny Le Clos is highly fragrant, with pronounced floral scents. Its dark berry and cherry flavors make it a vigorous, concentrated Cabernet Franc with pure tannins. This is a full-bodied wine of great value, which will improve with age.

White wine from Clos Rougeard: Le Brézé

Le Brézé du Clos Rougeard is distinguished by its beautiful, clear, pure and complex bouquet. It offers extremely varied notes of honey, ginger, berries, green grapes, pears and even offers some tropical fruit flavors. The wine is clear and fresh, and its finish reveals a touch of oak that magnifies with age.
