Appellation Coteaux-du-Giennois

A confidential appellation

The Coteaux du Giennois appellation is not the most famous in the Loire Valley and yet it is next door to two star AOCs: Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. Although it has been slow to establish itself in the region, it is increasingly found on the tables of our restaurants and in our wine shops. The vineyard extends over the departments of Loiret and Nièvre in 14 communes. The total surface area of the appellation is 200 hectares.

Terroir

In the northern part of the appellation the terroir is composed of silica clay and limestone. In the south there are white soils where siliceous deposits are often present.

Figures

In terms of figures, the appellation produces between 8,500 and 10,000 hectolitres each year, or about 1 million bottles. For this production, there are about forty winegrowers, a cooperative cellar and a trade carried out by wine merchants from the wine region.

Varieties

Three different grape varieties are grown in the appellation: gamay and pinot noir for the production of red and rosé wines and sauvignon for the production of white wines. In distribution, Sauvignon represents 57% of the vineyard, Pinot Noir 32% and Gamay 11%.

The types of wine in the AOC

The rosé wines of the appellation are fine and reveal original notes of pepper and aromas of white-fleshed fruits such as peach.

The red wines produced from pinot noire and gamay are fruity and light. There are aromas of red and black fruits.

White wines made only from Sauvignon are very fresh and reveal typical aromas of the grape variety on exotic fruits with some singularity.
