The winemaker

An unusual estate, a family work, a unique spirit

In 1967, Maurice Filliatreau gave up his 7 hectares of vineyards in Chaintres to his son Paul, then 24 years old. Paul Filliatreau took over this estate with the aim of developing the Saumur and Saumur Champigny appellations.

He enlarged it little by little until it reached about 45 hectares. It was then that he discovered, hidden under the roots of the vines, the historic site of the Grande Vignolle, composed of a seigneurial dwelling and numerous cellars dug into the tufa stone. He will turn it into a tasting place for the wines of his domain.

Gradually, he shared his challenges and entrepreneurial spirit with his wife and children, who also became involved in the estate at his side. His mother, nicknamed "Mamie", also joined the adventure and remains an important figure in the Domaine Filliatreau. It is now her two children, Christina and Fredrik who have taken over this heritage, rich in tradition and know-how.

Fine and demanding wines

Located near the village of Chaintres, in the communes of Dampierre sur Loire, Varrains and Chacé, southeast of Saumur, the Filliatreau estate extends over approximately 45 hectares that evolve on clay-limestone soils. Rich in fossilized shells, these soils retain water easily and thus provide nutrients to the wine, giving it texture and color. Finally, the wines of this estate, both delicate and powerful, are from the Saumur Champigny appellation.

An estate committed to an organic and biodynamic transition Paul Filliatreau is gradually converting all the vines on his estate to organic farming. Indeed, he understands very quickly that productivity, the watchword of the 70's, is not the ideal way of cultivation. He therefore adopted more qualitative and organic methods, respectful of nature and the terroir.

Thus, since 1998, the Château Fouquet, the emblematic vintage of the domain, is the first certified vintage. This transformation took place little by little: we observe the passage from a productivist culture to a reasoned culture and then organic. This work required many hours of work. Indeed, to cultivate organically requires a rigor and a particular requirement. The vines are now certified organic. This label allows to attest that there is no chemical treatment during the production, in the vines or the wine making.

Paul Filliatreau is also beginning a transition to biodynamics. The goal is to adopt an approach closer to nature and natural methods that strengthen the plant. This sensitivity for organic farming is finally accompanied by a reduction in mechanization and contributes to the foundation of the "Filliatreau spirit".
