The winemaker

The history of Domaine François Chidaine

François Chidaine was born in Montlouis sur Loire, into an old family of Touraine winegrowers. He started out as a farmhand on the family estate, before deciding to set up a few hectares of vines in Montlouis sur Loire in 1989.

From the very start of his domaine, François Chidaine was interested in growing vines organically, and then biodynamically. He increased the size of his estate over time, reaching 17 hectares in 1999.

In 2000, François was joined by his wife, who opened the domaine's tasting cellar called "La Cave Insolite" on the banks of the Loire, still in Montlouis.

During the 2000s, François Chidaine further expanded his estate by taking over some ten hectares in the Vouvray appellation, on the other side of the river, on the north bank.

Wishing to explore grape varieties other than Chenin Blanc, which he considers to be his raw material, François Chidaine has further extended his estate in the Touraine appellation, thanks to the acquisition of a few plots in Chissay in the Cher valley.

Finally, in 2010, François Chidaine took his estate in a new direction, acquiring new vineyard plots in Murcia, a province in south-eastern Spain.

The Domaine François Chidaine vineyard

Today, the French Domaine François Chidaine covers 37 hectares, spread over diversified terroirs and centered on the commune of Montlouis sur Loire. Soils alternate between flinty clay and clay-limestone.

The Chenin Blanc grape occupies more than half of the vineyard on the Montlouis soil (20 hectares), plus the 10 hectares of Vouvray. A little further east in the Cher valley, under the Touraine appellation, the other 7 hectares are more diversified, with Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Grolleau, Cabernet Franc, Côt and Pineau d'Aunis.

Spanish wines from Murcia belong to the Bullas appellation and produce red and white vintages.

Domaine François Chidaine has been farmed agriculture biologique, since 1992 and biodynamie since 1999. These methods, which are as natural as possible, reflect the winemaker's mindset of putting the plant at the center of his concerns. Biodynamics consists in enhancing the soil and the vines in their natural environment, using preparations derived from plant, animal and mineral matter.

The calendar is also dictated by nature, according to the solar and lunar rhythms that influence vine growth. The soil is worked by ploughing and scratching.
