The winemaker
The History of Domaine Ogereau
For five generations the Ogereau family has been growing grapes, with a predilection for Chenin. Their know-how goes back to the end of the 19th century, in the heart of the thousand-year-old vineyards of the Pays de la Loire.
The Chenin
Domaine Ogereau is intimately associated with Chenin, the historic grape variety of the region that requires a lot of attention and care. Each parcel produces a particular grape and expresses the structure, power and vivacity of Chenin differently. Thanks to this grape variety, Domaine Ogereau produces dry wines for ageing, as well as exceptional sweet wines, with the help of noble rot. Fungi and bacteria help the vines to capture water and nutrients. The Botrytis cinerea fungus in particular forms the noble rot that is harvested and helps make sweet wines.
The Domaine Ogereau vineyard
The vineyard of Domaine Ogereau extends in the heart of the Coteaux du Layon and Savennières, on both sides of the Loire. The geography of the place is chaotic and its soils are very varied: volcanic rocks, sandstone, poudingues, schists and wind sands.
The vineyards cover 24 hectares. Chenin represents 99% of the white grape varieties, accompanied by 1% of Chardonnay. Red wine production uses Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Gamay Noir à jus blanc and Grolleau. The average age of the vines is 40 years. The average production of Domaine Ogereau is 70,000 bottles per year.
In general, the soils are very stony and shallow. They are dry and arid, as they only receive rare rainfall. However, the vines benefit from the oceanic climate, with westerly winds that bring in humid, salty sea air. These contrasts create the magic of the gentle Angevine.
Domaine Ogereau is run in the most natural way possible. The neighbor's cows provide manure that is used to make biodynamic compost and the sheep of the roving shepherd graze the vines during the winter. Small animals then participate in the ecosystem and the renewal of the land, without being threatened by chemicals: birds, bats, hares, earthworms and deer.
Pruning, tilling and harvesting are done manually. The artisanal and soft wine making benefits from long maturings for a result is of a great quality.
