The winemaker

The history of Alain Jaume wines

The history of Alain Jaume wines is linked to that of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. In the 14th century, when the Popes were established in Avignon, they had the pontifical château built in Châteauneuf du Pape. As wine-making was closely linked to the church, the Popes recognized the immense quality of the terroir for growing vines. So they decided to develop the vineyards surrounding their residence.

The Jaume family has a long tradition as winegrowers, and records show the Jaume family cultivating land north of Châteauneuf du Pape as far back as 1826. Since then, the family's lands have continued to expand to produce wines from the southern Rhône Valley.

In 1979, Odile and Alain Jaume created Domaine Grand Veneur. It originally covered 9 hectares, compared with 78 today. The Clos de Sixte vineyard was acquired in 2003.

Today, Domaine Alain Jaume comprises four distinct estates:
- Domaine Grand Veneur with appellations Châteauneuf du Pape - Côtes du Rhône
- Domaine du Clos de Sixte, Lirac appellation
- Château Mazane, Vacqueyras appellation
- Domaine la Grangette Saint Joseph, Côtes-du-Rhône appellation

Alain Jaume wines are now managed by the family's descendants, Sébastien and Christophe.

The vineyards of Alain Jaume wines

The vineyards of Alain Jaume wines are managed with the greatest respect for the terroir. The soils are enriched with natural composts and maintained by shallow ploughing. Yields are deliberately low so as not to exhaust the soil. Harvesting and sorting are done by hand.

The grape varieties are Grenache noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre for red wines; Clairette, Roussanne and Viognier for white wines.
