The winemaker

The history of Clos Saint Jean

Clos Saint Jean is a family-run winery created in the early 20th century by Edmond Tacussel. It didn't yet bear the name Clos Saint Jean, as it wasn't until 1910. For just over a century, the estate has remained the property of the same family, although the surname has changed due to marriages.

Today, Clos Saint Jean is managed by the two brothers Pascal and Vincent Maurel. The estate has been progressively enlarged by successive generations to reach today's 41 hectares.

The Clos Saint Jean vineyard

The surface area of the Clos Saint Jean vineyard is therefore 41 hectares, of which 40 hectares are devoted to red wine - almost all of it - and 1 hectare to white wine. The vineyard covers more than half of the Crau plateau, one of the most renowned areas of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. Since taking over the estate, brothers Vincent and Pascal Maurel have restructured the vineyard and taken steps to run it as ecologically as possible.

Le Clos Saint is run with the greatest respect for the terroir and the environment. The use of phytosanitary products, insecticides, pesticides and herbicides has been reduced to a strict minimum. Yields are controlled by disbudding and green harvesting techniques.

The Clos Saint Jean wines

Clos Saint Jean - Châteauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous

Clos Saint Jean's Châteauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is a blend of an average of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Cinsault and 10% Vaccarese. The percentages are significantly reduced in order to add a very small proportion of Mourvèdre.

The wine belongs to the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation and is one of the most highly regarded. Combe des Fous, from the Crau, produces a wine with a complex, intense nose. Hints of undergrowth can be detected, adding to the fruity aromas.

Voluminous, round and fleshy on the palate. Tannins blend harmoniously with fruit flavors. The wine delivers a delicious sensation of velvety smoothness and fullness. The finish is long, smooth and suave.

Clos Saint-Jean - Châteauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina

Châteauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina is Clos Saint Jean's other great wine from the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. It's a blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre. The wine has a splendid, intense vermilion-red color. The nose is spicy and dominated by licorice.

Fresh blackberry is also present. The palate is powerful and dense, with a long, fresh finish.
