The History of Domaine Courbis

The history of Domaine Courbis dates back to the 16th century. It is a family estate, now owned by the two brothers Laurent and Dominique Courbis. Their ancestors settled on this terroir at the confluence of the Rhône and the Isère, on the right bank of the Rhône, in the middle of vertiginous belvederes, thus creating the most southern vineyard of the Saint Joseph appellation in an independent cellar and bordering the Cornas appellation. The steep hillsides had to be cleared first, before planting vines and, over the centuries, maintaining and developing the vineyard.

The Courbis brothers perpetuate the family tradition by making wines in a production unit that has been able to adapt to its time, mixing ancestral know-how and modern techniques.

Built in the middle of the vineyards, the Domaine Courbis cellar follows the shape of the hill and is thus an integral part of the landscape. The winery was built at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, in a gravitational way, in order to optimize the quality of the wines. Maceration is carried out in concrete vats, as well as in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats.

The Domaine Courbis vineyard

The Cornas and Saint-Joseph vineyards cover 35 hectares on the right bank of the Rhône. It produces an average of 160,000 bottles per year.

The terroir and grape varieties are divided into several appellation zones.

- The grapes for Saint Joseph red are grown on 18 hectares of 80% granite arena soil and 20% clay-limestone. The only grape variety grown is Syrah.

- The vines dedicated to the white Saint Joseph grow on a clay-limestone soil, representing 5 hectares. The grape variety is 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne.

- The Cornas vines represent 8 hectares of Domaine Courbis on a granite arena. The wine is made up entirely of Syrah.

- The red Crozes Hermitages occupies 90 ares of Syrah vines on a soil of rolled pebbles.

- The white Saint Péray covers 1 hectare equally between Marsanne and Roussane grapes, on granitic soil, on hillsides at 350 meters altitude.

- IGP Syrah represents 90 ares of Syrah on plots at 350 meters altitude.

- Viognier occupies 70 ares of young vines planted in 2014, on a granitic arena, at 400 meters altitude.

- Aube spans 90 ares of Syrah on a granitic arena.

Domaine Courbis is conducted in the most natural way possible, respecting the environment.
