The winemaker

The history of Domaine du Coulet

Domaine du Coulet was founded by Matthieu Barret in 1998. He also created a wine merchant business that bears his name. Domaine du Coulet is located in the commune of Cornas, which means "scorched earth" in Celtic. The AOC Cornas - created in 1936 - is produced only in this commune and uses just one grape variety: Syrah. The total surface area of the appellation is 116.4 hectares. According to archaeological digs, Charlemagne, Saint Louis and Louis XV already knew and appreciated the red wine produced from Cornas vines. Another testimony from the village priest in 1763 attests that the hills were already planted with vines and that the wine produced was an intense red, almost black color.

The Domaine du Coulet vineyard

The Domaine du Coulet vineyard covers 24 hectares of hillside vines on highly degraded granite soils. The grape varieties are Syrah to produce the wine of the eponymous appellation, as well as AOC Côtes du Rhône. Located in the northern Côtes du Rhône, the vineyards benefit from an ideal climate for growing vines. The four seasons are distinctly marked, and the grapes benefit from predominantly northerly winds that keep them healthy. Domaine du Coulet is farmed organically and biodynamically. It is certified by Ecocert and Biodyvin.

The wines of Domaine du Coulet

Domaine du Coulet's production is dominated by AOC Cornas red wines, powerful, elegant and tannic. Red fruit aromas give the wine a heady appearance. Cornas wines can be kept for a long time. Domaine du Coulet offers a wide range of wines, the majority of which belong to the Cornas appellation, but are complemented by red and white wines from AOP Côtes du Rhône, IGP Ardèche and Vin de France.
