The winemaker
The Domaine Tourbillon, a family history
The history of Domaine Tourbillon is a recent one, beginning in the middle of the 20th century. The grandparents of Benjamin Tourbillon, the current owner, were winegrowers in Gigondas. This exceptional terroir in the south of France benefits from the sunshine and influences of the Mediterranean, and produces wines of character.
Today, Benjamin has taken up the family torch. Attached to tradition, he is making the vineyard flourish and expanding the winery to diversify and vinify his own wines.
The Domaine Tourbillon vineyard
Domaine Tourbillon is located in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation, with parcels facing the famous château, lieu-dit "Grand Devès". This pebbly soil stores up the sun's heat to diffuse it at night, preventing the vines from excessive temperature variations.
The slopes face south-west. The soil is clay-limestone and arid, forcing the roots to seek nutrients deep down and concentrate their aromas.
Another part of Domaine Tourbillon lies in Gigondas, below the village overlooked by the Dentelles de Montmirail. The clay-rich soils produce highly complex wines. The vines are battered by the Mistral wind, which cleanses and dries out the berries, which develop powerful flavors. Finally, Domaine Tourbillon farms plots in the Côtes-du-Rhône region, on sun-drenched clay-limestone and gravel soils.
The grape varieties of Domaine Tourbillon
Domaine Tourbillon uses a wide variety of grape varieties to create rich, original blends:
-Grenache noir for deliciousness, generosity and roundness
-Syrah for its diversity of aromas and to enhance the wine's color.
-Mourvèdre which gives so much personality to the full-bodied, structured wine.
-Cinsault for its pronounced aromas of red fruit, dried fruit and white flowers.
-Carignan noir for tannic structure
-Grenache Blanc, full-bodied and low in acidity, which lends its length to the palate.
-Clairette for its aromas of fennel, apple, lime blossom, apricot and peach.
-Roussanne for finesse and delicacy
-Muscardin for its floral bouquet and pleasant freshness
