Gourt de Mautens
(7 customer reviews)
The name of the estate "Gourt de Mautens" is the name of the area where part of the vineyard and the family farm are located. This name dates back to 1635 and means in Provencal "gourt": place where water comes out and "mautens": bad weather.
Jérôme Bressy, the winemaker, was only 23 years old for this first vintage, which he made in a converted shed on his grandparents' farm. He realized his childhood dream through the creation of the domain and its wines. Today he wishes to continue as long as possible a precise, natural and artisanal viticulture. Find out more

The winemaker
The story of an avangardist estate in organic and biodynamic agriculture
Son of winegrowers and from the southern Rhone Valley (in Rasteau), Jérôme Bressy was very quickly intrigued by the profession and the importance it has in the work of the winegrower. If his parents sell their grapes to the cooperative cellar, the latter has very quickly the wish to emancipate himself from this straitjacket and to produce his own vintages.
At the age of 17, he stops school and accompanies his father while learning the gestures of the elders of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Then, Jérôme became passionate about great wines and realized that for that he needed living land, and thus organic plots even though he was still dependent on the cooperative cellar.
In the line of the organic, he discovers the biodynamic in 1993. At that time, he was more or less an enlightened person (or an avant-gardist in retrospect) in the eyes of others. In 1996, he decided to sign his first vintage in his parents' garage. At first frightened, his parents soon realized how proud they could be of their son's work.
After two years of work, Jerome convinces the banks to finance a better winemaking system. His style stands out and is praised by professionals and amateurs alike who make him understand that passion is the best weapon to overcome all kinds of trials.
In addition, Jerome Bressy cultivates old varieties: he started in 1993 with Counoise (black grape variety). Since then, he has been growing Vieux Carignan, Syrah and Vaccarèse for the red; Picardon, Clairette and Grenache for the white. His way of working is simple: he tastes many grape varieties and selects only the best ones to work them in depth.
The estate has 15 hectares of vines with very low yields, thanks in particular to century-old plants that produce little (80% of the vines are 50 to 95 years old). The harvest is long and can last until November. This risk-taking is done in the name of the perfect expression of the terroir.
One of the secrets of his vineyard is also the small size of his team, consisting of three full-time staff. The importance of being present on all fronts is as much a pride as it is a requirement to stay on target. This philosophy is accompanied by biodynamic farming. If the estate is certified, the label does not mention it, so as not to make it a commercial argument.
During the winemaking process, Jerome does not add yeast or enzymes. He simply adds a very small amount of sulfur after malolactic to stabilize the wine. Aging is long, the estate keeps the whites for an average of two years and the reds for three years so that they are appreciable upon release.
The wines
The wines of the estate are cut for long aging (about 20 years) and only reveal their rich aromatic palette after 7 years. It is advisable to decant the young ones and open the more mature ones an hour before the beginning of the meal.
The 2016 Domaine Gourt de Mautens Blanc is a complex blend that includes many grape varieties, including Grenache Blanc, Grenache Gris and Clairette. It develops aromas of white flowers, white currants and white peach that meld into this powerful, full-bodied fine white that has fabulous concentration and depth while remaining pure and balanced.
The 2016 Domaine Gourt de Mautense Jérôme Bressy stands out for its incredible opulence and sweetness of fruit. It offers aromas of black raspberry and strawberry mingling with notes of incense, white and black pepper, fruitcake, plums or even Asian spices. It has good purity with a clean, dry finish without the punch of sweet fruit. It needs good aeration upon opening and can be kept for a good decade.
