The winemaker

The history of Domaine de Grangeneuve

Domaine de Grangeneuve was created by Odette and Henri Bour. The name originated in Lorraine, but in 1846, Christophe Bour left his native village of Lening in Moselle to join the army and go to Algeria in 1846.

The Bour family's wine business then began, but on the other side of the Mediterranean, when Christophe obtained a land grant in Tlemcen, after spending 10 years in the army.

His grandson Paul settled in Rio Salado, where he married Mathilde Rosello, from a family of Spanish winegrowers. Their son, Henri, in turn married Odette, a young girl from a winegrowing family of Italian and Provençal origin. The Bour family's roots come from many different countries, but what they have in common is their close relationship with vines and wine. Today, Henri and Nathalie are back in France, in the Drôme region.

The Domaine de Grangeneuve vineyard

The Domaine de Grangeneuve terroir was occupied by vines by the Romans as early as the 1st century. The Villa du Fayn was a winegrowing estate, the remains of which can still be seen today. The parcels are located at an altitude of 140 meters, on a clay-limestone plateau known as the "glacis de Grangeneuve".

The soil benefits from the decomposition of the limestone rocks of the Moulon massif, as well as alluvial and pebble deposits from the Rhône's tributaries. While this type of terroir is not very fertile for agriculture, it is perfect for vines.

Domaine de Grangeneuve vines were planted between 1964 and 1974. The vineyard was completely restructured in 1992, resulting in vines with an average age of 35 years.

Domaine de Grangeneuve's red grape varieties are composed of 45% Syrah, 45% Grenache noir and 10% Cinsault. For the white, it's 60% Viognier and 40% Marsanne, Roussanne and Grenache blanc.

Domaine de Grangeneuve, located at the very northern end of the southern Rhône Valley, is run using viticulture raisonnée, with the least aggressive products possible. The grapes are harvested when perfectly ripe, followed by vinification by grape variety and plot. In this way, each grape variety is brought to the fore and treated on a tailor-made basis.

The wines of Domaine de Grangeneuve

Domaine de Grangeneuve produces AOC Grignan les Adhémar wines, whose geographical location is not well known. It is the most northerly of the southern Rhône vineyards.

The climate is already Mediterranean, but less so than the Côtes du Rhône Villages. This prevents the berries from being crushed by the sun, which makes them lose their splendor. The wines are less sun-drenched, but more balanced and supple, always very fresh. Domaine de Grangeneuve offers white, rosé and red wines.
