The winemaker

Romaine Duvernay's deep attachment to the Rhone Valley

Romain Duvernay comes from a family of wine merchants. Romain Duvernay is a talented oenologist ("a fine palate" say his peers) who began his career in Bordeaux, pursued it in Burgundy and eventually joined a national foodservice distributor. Passionate about Rhone Valley wines, in 1998 he and his father set up a wine merchant business in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, offering wines from all over the region. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of grape varieties, in 2010 Romain Duvernay created a brand bearing his name, to be used in all the valley's appellations.

Jean-Marc Pottiez, convinced by the enormous potential of this terroir and by Romain Duvernay's talent, created, in 2016, NewRhône Millésimes, and joined forces with Romain Duvernay. This duo share the same passion and rigorously work each grape variety to promote the charm of Rhone Valley wines. Romain Duvernay has been criss-crossing the region for years, discovering little-known estates producing excellent wines.

Values of this Maison de Négoce Romain Duvernay

Romain Duvernay and Jean-Marc Pottiez only work with winemakers who respect winemaking traditions, who take into account the specificity of their terroirs in a logic of reasoned viticulture. During his field visits, Romain Duvernay pays particular attention to harvesting and ageing conditions. His experience enables him to advise winemakers on the best combinations to make to produce intense, complex and fruity wines.

NewRhône Millésimes has decided to orient its range towards organic wines, more respectful of the environment. That's why, over the years, the Romain Duvernay and Romain Duvernay Domaines brands have added wines from estates with the High Environmental Value label, from organic farming estates and from sulfite-free estates.

The Rhone Valley terroir

It stretches along the banks of the Rhône from Vienne to Avignon. It is France's third largest vineyard, with over 75,000 hectares of vines. Annual production is around three million bottles (reds, whites, rosés, vins doux naturels and sparkling wines). This terroir enjoys a Mediterranean climate with low rainfall and plenty of sunshine. The wind that blows here is very beneficial for the vines. Soil composition and subsoil vary widely: granite, clay-limestone, sedimentary, pebbles and broken limestone.

The wines of Maison Romain Duvernay

NewRhône Millésimes markets its Rhône Valley Grand Vins under three brands. "Romain Duvernay", "Romain Duvernay Domaines" (a range that promotes the specificities of partner estates) and "Romain Duvernay Prestige", a line of cuvées aimed at professionals (restaurateurs, wine merchants...).
