The winemaker

The Château Laffitte-Teston run by passionate people

The Madiran terroir has been dedicated to wine production since 800 BC. In 1030, Benedictine monks arrived in the region on the route to Compostela. Thanks to their efforts, Madiran wine experienced significant growth. In the 17th century, sea transport was introduced, enabling the region's wines to be exported easily. In 1906, a group of producers was formed to rebuild the vineyards after the phylloxera crisis. Madiran and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh quickly became AOC wines in the mid-twentieth century. The Laffitte family has been producing wine for 5 generations. They were among the winegrowers who fought in the 1980s to bring the Madiran appellation up to a higher level of quality. Finally, Château Laffitte-Teston has been run by Jean-Marc Laffitte since 1983. Today, he continues to run it, supported by his two children, Ericka and Joris.

The Château Laffitte-Teston vineyard is managed with a master's hand

.
Château Laffitte-Teston is steeped in a strong family culture. A sense of welcome and generosity, but also singularity and strength of character are their hallmarks. The estate's 50 hectares benefit from excellent exposure. They are 60% planted with tannat, which remains the star grape of the Madiran appellation. The Laffitte family relies on genetically transmitted knowledge to cultivate their vines and master their wines. Their vines are harvested by hand, and some are over 70 years old. There is no grape analysis at the domaine, but the grapes are tasted to understand their complexity. In 2011, the family is marking its originality by experimenting with a new technique on a dozen barrels. The wines will be placed at a depth of 800 m in the Bétharram caves, where they will age for several months.

Chateau Laffitte-Teston and its three appellations

The estate produces three AOCs: Madiran, Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh and Côtes-de-Gascogne. All three wine colors are represented. The bottles often win awards, as attested by the 37 medals won over 37 years at the Concours Général Agricole de Paris. AOC Madiran and its grape variety, tannat, are known for their rustic character. But at Château Laffitte-Teston, we produce modern, well-balanced wines that do justice to the tannat grape. The majority are wines for laying down, full-bodied and fleshy. Pacherenc is just as well-balanced, thanks to the Petit Manseng and other white grape varieties.
