The winemaker

The history of Plaimont

Plaimont was born in the mid-1970s, under the impetus of André Dubosc. A local boy and winegrower himself, he came from a family that had been working the vines for three generations. Passionate about his terroir, his ambition was to restore the late-harvested appellations Saint-Mont and Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh to their former glory. He also wanted to create dry white vins de pays (which today correspond to IGP Côtes de Gascogne).

In 1979, André Dubosc joined forces with other winemakers, including three local caves, to found Plaimont: Pl for the Plaisance winery, Ai for the Aignan winery and Mont for the Saint Mont winery. Since then, the cooperative has been gradually enriched by the addition of new estates, châteaux and wineries.

Plaimont is more than just an association of wineries and winegrowers, it represents the excellence of the terroir. It is proud of its genetic heritage, including parcels listed in the conservatoire ampélographique des Monuments Historiques, as well as its prestigious châteaux.

The vineyards of Plaimont

Plaimont represents more than 800 winegrowing families. Average farm size ranges from 5 to 8 hectares, for a total of 5,300 hectares.

Since its creation, Plaimont has set itself the goal of growing only ancestral local grape varieties. It is also essential that vineyard management and wine-making are carried out with the utmost respect for biodiversity, in order to preserve terroirs and allow them to express their richness and specificities.

In 2002, Plaimont set up its own ampelographic conservatory, the first private conservatory in France which aims to rediscover the oldest local varieties and preserve them, so that local traditions are never lost. Today, Plaimont boasts 37 vine varieties and 12 varieties that have been brought up to date. Among them are, among others, Tannat, Pinenc, Colombard, Gros Manseng, Petit Manseng.

Winegrowers reduce the use of phytosanitary inputs and take care to preserve their soils from erosion by carefully selecting planted vegetation. Red plots benefit from natural grass cover, while white plots are planted with winter cover crops that act as true green manures.
