It was here, on the steep, vertiginous schist slopes overlooking the Saar, that the Romans were already cultivating vines in the 3rd century AD. Having long been one of the Moselle's most renowned winegrowing monasteries, the estate was acquired at the end of the 18th century by a wealthy brewing family from Brussels, the Van Volxem family.
