In a few words ...

Pauillac?s 1st Grand Cru Classé, Château Latour is remarkable for the consistency of its wines and their unique character. "it?s in the small vintages that you recognize a great terroir"? And it's at Château Latour that this adage is most aptly applied, with so many great wines produced in so many deplorable vintages. Founded in 1680, Château Latour, which takes its name from a 15th-century tower (the current one is a dovecote built around 1620), was owned by Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur in the early 18th century. Called Prince of the Vines by Louis XV because he also owned Châteaux Lafite, Mouton and Calon-Ségur, the Marquis quickly made Château Latour a household name. After a succession of buyers, the property was taken over by his descendants in 1841. Fourteen years later, the family?s efforts were rewarded with the designation of 1er grand cru classé.This historic Bordeaux family gradually sold its shares during the 20th century, when the château became the property of the British company allied lyons. This spirits specialist remained in Pauillac for only four years before selling the estate to French businessman François Pinault in 1993. A new dynamic was given to the estate with the renovation of the vats and cellars, and the introduction of biodynamic viticulture on certain parcels. The care given to the vines was perfected once again in 2012, with the addition of horses to the 47-hectare plot known as "l'enclos", used exclusively for the production of the first wine. Château Latour benefits from an exceptional terroir and the best techniques, enabling it to dominate the ranks of mythical wines. Embodying the style of Pauillac wines to the full, in 2012 the château decided to leave the primeur system governing all Bordeaux grands crus, and only sell its wines when they are ready to drink.
