Rangen is Alsace's southernmost Grand Cru. Its terroir is composed of volcano-sedimentary rocks and volcanic tuffs, which are quite rare in Alsace, and Rangen, at the eastern end of this rock formation, at the end of the Thur valley, is the only place where vine growing is possible. More southerly also means higher altitude and therefore later ripening. The extreme slope (over 90%) and the dark color of the rocks compensate for the altitude. The River Thur, which flows at the foot of the Rangen, also provides the humidity needed for botrytis to develop. However, in 2013, a cooler climate and late flowering prevented the production of such wines. The Pinot-Gris Rangen was harvested healthy, with very low yields, and the wine ended up drier than usual.
Appearance
Bright yellow color.
Aroma
The nose immediately develops typical Rangen characteristics: gunflint, smoke, even tar. Intense aromatic expression at this early stage.
Wine Fruity | Smoked
Taste
The palate is a demonstration of elegance. Slight roundness in the mid-palate. Acidity, noble bitters and strong minerality make for a stricter finish.
