JEAN BAPTISTE ADAM

3.5
(17 customer reviews)
Located on the Alsace wine route, at the foot of the Grand Cru Kaefferkopf in Ammerschwihr, our family business was founded in 1614 by Jean-Baptiste ADAM, a "gourmet-viticulturist". This official function, established in the Middle Ages, has now disappeared but the passion for wine has been passed on forever. Since then, fifteen generations have worked tirelessly in the vineyards and cellars. Since 1999, the estate has been committed to an environmentally friendly culture: it is worked exclusively in organic culture. But it is during the year 2003 that the nature will express itself fully through the management of the vineyard in biodynamy. Find out more

The winemaker

The story of a passionate family

Founded in 1614 by the Adam family in Ammerschwihr, the estate has developed a know-how that has endured for over four centuries. Today, it is Laure (15th generation), Jean-Baptiste (14th generation) and Jean Adam (13th generation) who manage the estate. The latter is a true reference in the world and history of Alsatian viticulture.

The commitments

Jean-Baptiste Adam instituted in 2004 the treatment of the vines in organic agriculture, and added a touch of biodynamic philosophy. According to him, this transition is a must, which allows him to privilege the pure and natural expression of the terroir, resulting in a wine that expresses itself in its most natural form.

Thanks to biodynamics, which considers the vineyard as a living organism, the vines are strengthened and stimulated to better resist diseases and parasites without a single recourse to pesticides, insecticides, weed killers or synthetic chemicals.

The estate is ploughed with a horse during the waning moon, during this period the grass grows back less quickly, which saves a week. The harvest is done manually in small crates by porters so as not to affect the quality of the berries picked.

The terroir

The Jean-Baptiste estate is divided into four terroirs:

- Letzenberg. Its marno-argilo-limestone soils produce Letzenberg riesling and pinot gris.
- The Grand Cru Wineck-Schlossberg. Composed of granitic soils, it is a great terroir for Riesling.
- The Grand Cru Kaefferkopf is the 51st Grand Cru of Alsace. It is defined by its clay-limestone soil which produces Riesling, Gewurztraminer and Kaefferkopf
- Grand Cru Marckrain. Its clay-limestone soils allow the cultivation of Pinot Gris.

The wines

The white wines are a solid lineup, with some differences. The Letzenberg Riesling is greedy and fresh, full and salivating. The Grand Cru Kaefferkopf gives a solid, precise and nuanced wine that is enriched with beautiful saline nuances. The Pinot Blanc offers fruity aromas with freshness and nice acidity that blend harmoniously to make a dry and balanced wine.

The crémants produced by the estate are dry. A wine of thirst, they are refreshing and can be drunk on any fine occasion or simply in the late afternoon. Fresh and thirst-quenching, you can feel floral notes on the nose.
