The winemaker

The History of Chateau la Tour Carnet

The Château la Tour Carnet is named after the squire who fought alongside his Lord at the end of the Hundred Years' War. This authentic feudal castle dates from the 12th century, but its vine culture was really worked from the 16th century.

Thanks to an exceptional work, its wine was recognized in 1855, at the time of the universal exhibition of Paris, as Grand Cru Classé. Château la Tour Carnet was bought by Bernard Magrez in 1999. As with all his estates, the entrepreneur granted a colossal capital that he invested in the vines and equipment, in order to restructure the vineyard and reserve the best treatment for the grapes.

The terroir of Château la Tour Carnet

The terroir of Château La Tour Carnet is made up of a veritable mosaic of diverse and varied soils. As always with Bernard Magrez, the vineyard is managed with traditional and manual rules to satisfy the protection of the environment, at the same time that new technologies are used to manage the estate. Thus, for example, drones keep watch over the smallest plot of land to perform a sharp analysis and optimize the work of the winemaker.

75 grape varieties to anticipate global warming

For now, grape varieties are assigned to parcels, based on their characteristics. For example, the Butte is a terroir conducive to Merlots, the hillsides, rather to Cabernets. But what will happen tomorrow, taking into account the increase in temperature?

In order to anticipate global warming, Bernard Magrez continues his own experiments. He is testing the responses of different grape varieties and their changes in ripeness, alcoholic degree, decrease in acidity, increase in the amount of sugar, etc. That's why he created a private collection of 75 grape varieties in 2013. The purpose of this plant heritage is to identify the grape varieties of tomorrow.
