The winemaker

The origin of the Château Angélus appellation

The natural location of Château Angélus makes up a sounding board that allowed the bells to ring the angelus morning, noon and night. They set the rhythm of the working day in the villages, but also in the vineyards. This moment was immortalised by the French impressionist painter, Jean-François Millet. His painting, simply called "L'Angélus", is today exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
The Angelus prayer dates from the time of Pope Calixtus III and was instituted to celebrate the Holy Roman Empire's victorious battle with the Ottoman army on 21 July 1456. The bell on the Chateau Angelus wine label is a tribute to this prayer.

The terroir and grape varieties of Château Angélus

The terroir of Château Angélus is made up of limestone and clay, which gives it an exceptional natural drainage capacity, as well as the ability to retain just the right amount of moisture. Its circus-like layout provides an original configuration that allows it to benefit from all types of exposure to the sun and wind. The natural slope also facilitates drainage.

The vines here can be exposed or not to the elements depending on their layout. There is a wide choice of soil types: hot or cold, poor or rich, deficient or balanced. The warm temperatures of the summer stimulate the precocity of the grapes. The qualities of the opulent, dense and unctuous wine are attributed to the early age of the soil. The grape varieties are distributed according to the soil and exposure. On the more clayey coast, we find the Merlots, while the Cabernet Francs - which represent 46% of the vines - are more at home on the sandy-clayey soils of the foot of the hill.

The wines of Château Angélus

The wines of Château Angélus are refined. Their colour strengthens during maturation and mentholated and spicy aromas bring elegance and finesse. Their tannins are dense, yet remain silky, bringing a note of freshness essential to their balance.

Château Angélus, the first Grand Cru classé A

Château Angélus is not by chance the first Grand Cru classé A. It is recognised as one of the jewels of its appellation, thanks to its typical Saint Emilion expression.

Carillon d'Angélus

Carillon d'Angélus is a Saint Émilion Grand Cru, born in 1987. Made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, it shines with its pure fruit flavours, velvety tannins and elegant finish.

Angelus No.3

N°3 d'Angélus is made almost exclusively of Merlot (between 84 and 90%). It is intended for immediate pleasure, as it is ideal for tasting as soon as it leaves the cellars. It is just as delicious as a wine for laying down, which can easily withstand 5 to 8 years of ageing. N°3 d'Angélus is distinguished by its fruity notes, its roundness and its finesse.
