The origin and history of Château Chasse-Spleen

The origins of Château Chasse-Spleen date back to the 18th century. Sieur Gressier, its owner in 1760, first built a Carthusian monastery, a long, low structure, at the center of his Grand-Poujeaux estate, and then worked hard to establish his vineyard.

In 1822, as a result of marriages and inheritances, the estate was split into two parts: Gressier-Grand-Poujeaux and Grand-Poujeaux Castaing. The name Chasse-Spleen was given to this second entity by its owner's widow, Rosa Ferrière-Castaing, to distinguish the two properties more clearly.

The origin of the use of the word "spleen" is controversial. For some, it comes from neighboring Odilon Redon, the Symbolist painter who illustrated Charles Baudelaire's Fleurs du Mal. For others, it comes from the British poet Lord Byron, who visited the estate in 1821, tasted the wine and declared: "This wine has no equal for chasing away dark thoughts". The estate subsequently passed through many hands, before being acquired in 2003 by the Merlaut-Villars family.

The Château Chasse-Spleen vineyard

The Château Chasse-Spleen vineyard covers 105 hectares. Most of the vines are Cabernet Sauvignon (73%). It is completed by 20% Merlot and 7% Petit Verdot. The average age of the vineyard is 35 years. Château Chasse-Spleen belongs to the Médoc's smallest appellation: Moulis-en-Médoc. It sits atop the Grand-Poujeaux hillside, not far from the Garonne River. The soil is 80% Garonne gravel on asteriated limestone and 20% clay-limestone.

The vines benefit from exceptional access to water, between frequent rainfall and the moisture available in the subsoil's clay and limestone sub-layer. Château Chasse-Spleen's vineyards are traditionally cultivated, with shoeing and de-shoeing, and the grapes are harvested by hand. The estate is certified HVE (High Environmental Value).
Particular attention is paid to biodiversity, the use of the circular economy, and the production and use of renewable energy.
