The winemaker
The history of the winery
The property has very ancient origins. It owes its name to the Congregation of the Mission, which was founded in the 17th century. The first plantations of vines on this estate date back to the Middle Ages. Then, they were bequeathed to the congregation, which took care of the vineyard and produced a wine of excellence, one of the greatest vintages of the appellation.
The Mission wines gained international renown in the 19th century, under the impetus of the estate's next owners, the Chiapella family. In 1862, they obtained their first gold medal at the Universal Exhibition in London. The successive owners will continue this excellent viticultural work and further develop the reputation of this Grand Cru.
Château la Mission Haut Brion has now joined the Clarence Dillon estate and has benefited from significant investments that have allowed for major renovations and the construction of modern state-of-the-art facilities.
The vineyard
The vineyard is divided into three red varieties (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) and two white varieties (one-third Sauvignon and two Semillon).
The vines are spread over the large gravel terrace of Haut-Brion, located between two streams, the Peugue and the Serpent. The soil is sandy-clay with one of the gravels consisting of a wide variety of quartz.
The wines
Chateau La Mission Haut Brion is the estate's first wine and comes in red and white.
The white, 2020 vintage is a racy and elegant wine with an intense aromatic bouquet of orange blossom, lemon zest, grapefruit and floral notes. Made from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, it has received numerous awards.
Chateau La Mission Haut Brion red vintage 2012 is a wine made from a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It is rated 5 stars in the 2016 Bettane guide. It is a fine and elegant wine with an original bouquet and a beautiful deep purple color.
La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion is the second wine of the property, it is a complex and fragrant Bordeaux with a beautiful aromatic expression, very fresh. The nose is fruity and the palate crisp, with a juicy attack.
