(38 customer reviews)
Situated on the oldest Bordeaux wine terroir, Château Malartic-Lagravière, one of only six Bordeaux wines classified in white and red. It was bought in 1997 by the Bonnie family. History The domain Lagravière has always been known for the quality of its soil and its famous severe croup. This is in honor of Count Hippolyte of Malartic, admiral in the service of the kings of France and owner of the field in the eighteenth century, the castle was renamed Malartic Lagravière. Château Malartic-Lagravière is located on a high terrace deeply cut by the stream of White Water and its tributaries. It consists of 8 meters deep with gravel islands dating from the Quaternary period. If bass layer realizes an excellent drainage surface, the shelly limestone basement, composed of fossils from the warm seas and clay veins, retains an important water reserve. It ensures perfect water supply of the vine, even during the most severe droughts. High permeability soil, a sunny climate, reduced susceptibility to weather variations are eminently favorable factors. Find out more

The winemaker

The producer and the terroir

The Lagravière estate has always been known for the quality of its terroir. It was purchased at the end of the 17th century by the family of Count Hippolyte de Maurès de Malartic. Located on a high terrace deeply cut by the Eau Blanche stream and its tributaries, the estate comprises 53 hectares, of which 46 hectares are for red and 7 for white. Enjoying a great reputation since the 20th century, Château Malatric-Lagravière is one of only six crus classified as both white and red in the 1953 Graves classification.

The family is keen to respect traditions while injecting a breath of modernity with, for example, the installation of a very innovative vat room. The latter is octagonal and is composed of twenty stainless steel vats and ten truncated cone-shaped, thermo-regulated wooden vats, which allow, due to their small size, a plot-by-plot vinification.

The grape varieties of the estate are 56% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot for the black grapes. For the white grapes, we find 80% Sauvignon and 20% Semillon.

Vintages classified in the 1953 Graves classification

The Château Malartic-Lagravière red is a wine marked by a beautiful density, whose concentration is balanced by a remarkable freshness. Its tannins are racy and elegant. Very Cabernet, it develops a good aromatic power accompanied by a great freshness.

The Château Malartic-Lagravière white displays a pale color with an intense nose, pure fruitiness, ripe and subtle. Floral nuances accompany notes of peach. Composed of 76% Sauvignon, it is mellow on the attack, juicy in the mid-palate, dense and airy, it soars on the finish, long and all in delicacy.

The Malartic Reserve, henceforth named Le Comte de Malartic, stands out with a filigree, inviting bouquet marked by freshness and fruity notes. Its attack is fruity and juicy. We are faced with a sapid and delicious wine.
