The History of the Castle

The history of Chateau Pichon-Longueville has its roots in the late seventeenth century with the marriage in 1694 of Baron Jacques Pichon to Therese Desmezures de Rauzan, owner of the estate and steward of the Latour and Margaux estates.

In 1850, the estate was split in two and the part belonging to Baron Raoul Pichon de Longueville became the Pichon-Longueville estate (or Pichon Baron estate). In 1851, Baron Raoul had the prestigious Renaissance-style castle built there.

In 1855, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition, the wine of Château Pichon-Longueville was classified as a second great growth in the official classification of Bordeaux wines.

In 1933, the estate is sold to the Bouteiller family who will manage it for 50 years. In 1987, AXA Millésimes bought it with the aim of exploiting the potential of great wines from vineyards with a prestigious past. On this occasion, the estate was modernized and regained its letters of nobility.

The terroir

Chateau Pichon-Longueville is located in the terroir of Pauillac, about 40 kilometers north of Bordeaux, on the left bank of the Gironde River.

On soils made up of gravel, pebbles and sands typical of the appellation, the vine grows perfectly. The subsoils allow a storage of rainwater intended for the roots, and the natural relief allows drainage.

Moreover, the oceanic climate, softened by the proximity of the Gironde estuary, allows to gather all the conditions to make Pauillac wines prestigious Bordeaux wines.

Chateau Pichon Baron covers 73 hectares of vines, with an average age of 35 years. For the elaboration of the Château Pichon Baron cuvée, the oldest vines are selected according to the quality of their fruit.

The vineyard is composed of 65% Cabernet-Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet-Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The parcels are carefully divided, so that each one benefits from a precise work adapted to its soil and its climate.

The wines

Producing only one vintage until now, Château Pichon Baron has been producing a second wine, "Les Tourelles de Longueville", since 1986. Since 2012, a third wine is produced: "Les Griffons de Pichon Baron".

The Chateau Pichon Baron 2014 is a wine with a dark and intense, almost black color. Its expressive nose offers a great aromatic palette: black fruits, spices, undergrowth... It is elegant and subtle. In the mouth, the wine is woody and stands out with a straight, precise and fleshy attack. The tannins do not cover the fruit and are greedy.

The Les Tourelles de Longueville 2015 vintage offers a dark ruby color and a nose with aromas of red fruits (black currant, wild strawberry) and sweet spices. In the mouth, the attack is fresh and elegant. The structure of the wine is powerful, the material is harmonious and the finish is balanced.
