The History of Chateau Saint Pierre

Château Saint Pierre is an elegant building enthroned in the middle of the vineyards. In 1693, Château Saint Pierre was already a wine-producing estate. It belonged then to the Marquis of Cheverry and was called Serançan.

In 1767, its new owner, the Baron de Saint Pierre, gave it its final name. In 1832, when the baron died, his two daughters inherited the Château Saint Pierre. The property was divided into two parts. Each of the heiresses receives half of the vineyards and the buildings are also shared : the castle, the cellars and the other building, the Tour Carnet.

However, the wine production is continued. In 1855, during the classification of the crus, Chateau Saint Pierre is at the top of the list of the Fourth Great Growths. One of the heiresses sold her share to Léon Sevaistre, a talented winemaker, owner of Château Saint Louis in Saint Julien. The wine was then produced under two names: Saint Pierre Sevaistre and Saint Pierre Bontemps Dubarry, the wife's name of the other heiress.

The two halves of Château Saint Pierre were reunited when two Belgian brothers from Antwerp, Pierre and Charles Van den Bussche, bought it in 1922. However, one part of the original estate is missing: the cellars, which had meanwhile been sold to Alfred Martin who needed to store his production there.

It was not until 1982 that Château Saint Pierre finally regained its original appearance, when Henri Martin, Alfred's son, bought the entire estate. The estate then reverted to Henri Martin's daughter, married to Jean-Louis Triaud, former president of the Girondins de Bordeaux club, with whom she manages the estate.

The vineyard of Château Saint Pierre

The vineyard of Château Saint Pierre covers 17 hectares. Its grape varieties are 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. The average age of the vines is 50 years. The annual production of the estate is 75,000 bottles.

The soil is composed of Günzian gravel on a clay-limestone layer. The vines benefit from the heat stored during the day by the gravel and released at night. The temperature can thus remain quite stable. The soil is particularly well drained, which forces the vines to produce large roots that seek water and nutrients deep in the earth.

The grapes are harvested by hand. The traditional vinification is carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Aging lasts from 14 to 16 months, in barrels, half renewed every year.

The wines of Château Saint Pierre

The Château Saint Pierre is the grand cru of the estate. Elegant, its color is dense and deep, oscillating between dark garnet and purple. On the nose, we find aromas of violet, wood, roasting, vanilla... as well as notes of game or truffle after a good maturity. The mouth is full-bodied but we find notes of black fruits quite expressive which give a magnificent balance to the whole. A fine Saint-Julien is long on the palate that will perfectly sublimate a beautiful rib of beef or game in sauce.

Le II du Château Saint Pierre is, as its name suggests, the estate's second wine. Fresher and less complex than its big brother, this wine remains very rich and complete. On the nose, as on the palate, we find notes of vanilla, black fruits and undergrowth. Round and with melted tannins, this wine offers a soft finish, with a great aromatic persistence. A well-balanced and powerful red wine that will be perfect with a nice red meat accompanied by a gratin dauphinois.
