In a few words ...

The name of the estate comes from the place known as "cibaley", close to the Gascon "chibaley" - meaning knight - which designated these lands as early as the 18th century. The estate?s winemaking history began when jean ricard bought the land in 1865. Already owner of the neighboring châteaux fieuzal, haut-bailly and malartic-lagravière, he bought the estate, which he himself renamed "domaine de chevalier", before planting vines (at the time, the land consisted solely of pine trees). The Ricard family watched over this Graves jewel, protected by the Léognan forest, for more than a century, and it was under the aegis of Jean?s son-in-law and then his grandson that the estate rapidly reached the level of Bordeaux?s finest crus. This is evidenced by the classification of the Grands Crus Classés de Graves in 1953, when the family?s meticulous work was rewarded with a nomination that many other crus would cherish for a long time to come. In 1983, forty years after this classification and after more than a century of family operation, the estate was acquired by the Bernard family, who had previously specialized in the trade of eaux de vies. Their declared ambition was "to continue the work begun one hundred and twenty years earlier, and to establish a long-term approach to the heritage and quality of a product steeped in history and rich in a unique image". to achieve this, olivier bernard (aged 23 at the time) made a number of investments in the estate.to achieve this, olivier bernard (aged 23 at the time) invested heavily, clearing some of the pine trees to replant vines on land that today produces red and white wines, both of which are strong values in the appellation. wine consultant stéphane derenoncourt joined the domaine in 2009 to bring his expertise to bear. Robert parker describes the 2010 red vintage as "opulent, complex and delicious", while olivier bernard soberly declares of his wines, "a vertical tasting of the last thirty vintages would show that there is no break.
