The winemaker

The history of Domaine de Chevalier

Domaine de Chevalier dates back to the second half of the 19th century. The western part of the Graves on which it stands used to be a vast forest. However, historical records refer to the Domaine de Chivaley, the Gascon word for knight, as early as the 17th century. The origin of this name is linked to the presence of the ancient route to Santiago de Compostela, which still borders the property.

In 1865, Arnaud and Jean Ricard acquired the Domaine de Chevalier to develop the vineyard. Jean's son-in-law, Gabriel Beaumartin, took up the torch and worked tirelessly for 40 years to produce wines of the highest quality. Claude Ricard then took over the reins and managed the estate for 35 years. Thanks to his reputation as an encyclopedic winemaker, Domaine de Chevalier joined the select group of Grands Crus Classés de Graves in the 1953 classification. He also developed international sales.

In 1983, Domaine de Chevalier was bought by the Bernard family, specialists in the Bordeaux Grand Cru and brandy trade. The vineyard was enlarged and the facilities modernized. The estate's current manager is Olivier Bernard. The "Domaine de Chevalier" company manages and operates three other vineyards: Domaine de la Solitude in Martillac, Château Lespault Martillac and Clos des Lunes in Sauternes.

The Domaine de Chevalier vineyard

Today, the Domaine de Chevalier vineyard covers around 100 hectares, 45 of which are devoted to vines. The vast majority of vines - 40 hectares - are red, and the remaining 5 hectares are white. The gravelly soil supports several grape varieties. The red vineyard is planted with 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc. The white vineyard is made up of 70% Sauvignon and 30% Sémillon.
