Clos de Tart

The Clos de Tart is located in Burgundy, more precisely in Morey-Saint-Denis in Côte d'Or. It produces a grand cru of the côte de nuit, a French wine of controlled origin. Its vineyard is quite singular, because of its diverse nature and its terroir. The orientation of its vines is also unusual. Indeed, they are planted from north to south. The estate is entirely surrounded by a historic dry stone wall that was restored in 2006. In its entirety, it reaches 1.2 km, hence the name "Clos". Find out more

The winemaker

A little history

The Clos de Tart was founded in 1141 by the Bernardine nuns of the Abbey of Tart. The Clos became the property of the Marey-Monge family in 1791 and then was sold to a family from the Mâconnais, Mommessin, in 1932. In nearly a thousand years, the Clos de Tart has known only three lines of owners. Since its creation, it has never been divided up, which makes it the largest Monopole classified as Grand Cru in Burgundy. The Clos obtained its own AOC in 1939. It was given a new lease of life following the arrival of Sylvain Pitiot, the estate's manager. Indeed, his wine has experienced a meteoric qualitative progression since the 1996 vintage. This winemaker retired from the estate in 2015, leaving his place to Jacques Devauges, the former technical director of Domaine de l'Arlot. Groupe Artémis, an investment company of the Pinault family, bought the 7.53 hectares of Clos du Tart in 2018.

His vineyard and his wine

This 7.53-hectare vineyard is owned by Artemis and has been governed by Alessandro Noli since March 2019. It is one of the five grand crus of the village. Pinot noir exclusively composes the red wines of the DOC. The grapes are harvested at high maturity and in a manual way with a vinification according to the parcels. The pinot noir grape variety is vinified in 100% new oak barrels for 18 months and the grapes are 85% destemmed.

This wine is very famous, with an annual production of 226 hectoliters, or over 30,000 bottles. 65% of the production is exported mainly to the United States, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan. Some years, the domain produces a second wine called "La Forge de Tart", downgraded to Morey-Saint-Denis premier cru. This is to enhance the quality of Clos de Tart.

During 2016, Clos de Tart saw the arrival of biodynamic practices, with Biodyvin certification to follow in 2019. The estate also inaugurated a new vat house with the 2019 vintage. This means that it went from 7 stainless steel tanks to 14 truncated wooden tanks of various sizes. What to go even further to express all the diversity and complementarity of the parcels of this terroir.
