Clos de tart was founded in 1141 by the Bernardine nuns of the Abbey of Tart, a dependency of the Abbey of Cîteaux. In 1791, clos de tart became the property of the marey-monge family, and was sold in 1932 to the mommessin family, originally from the mâconnais region, who are the sole owners. It is a single parcel vineyard of 7.53 hectares located on the finage of morey-saint-denis in the côte de nuits. Since its creation, this clos has never been divided up, and today it is the largest monopole classified as a grand cru in Burgundy. This 7.5-hectare parcel is located in the middle of the hillside at an altitude ranging from 269 m to 302 m. It has a uniform east-southeast exposure and is surrounded by a 1.2 km stone wall, hence the name "clos". While the vineyard's exposure is homogeneous, its geology is complex: the soil, clay-limestone, is made up of several types of limestone that define several precisely delineated microclimates. Each of the 6 microclimates is harvested separately, as if they were different appellations. Unlike the vast majority of Côte d'Or vineyards, the Clos de Tart vines are planted in a north-south orientation.
