The winemaker

House History

Its history began as early as 1640, when the Henriot family left Lorraine to settle in Champagne, in Reims. Very active in the wine trade, they quickly became familiar with the region and established a small vineyard. The latter grew over time and saw many generations succeed one another, always with this desire to make quality wines.

Its real rise takes place in 1808 when an unfortunate event occurs: a Nicolas Henriot dies. Apolline, then the widow of the winegrower, took over the family estate and founded a brand: this was the creation of the Maison Henriot. With her sharp business sense, she allows the House to shine and prosper by appearing on the finest tables in France and Europe.

A few decades later, in 1880, a marriage between Paul Henriot and Marie Marguet extended the surface area of the vineyard. Indeed, Marie Marguet brings in her suitcases beautiful plots of Chardonnay, adding then to the vineyard of the Henriot family. These vines, coming from the Côte des Blancs, lead the property to focus on a new style of wine: the Blanc de Blancs.

The end of the 19th century marks a turning point for the vineyard which will unfortunately not be spared by the Phylloxera, then the First World War in the 20th century. But from 1926, Etienne Henriot (agricultural engineer), is at the head of the house and enlarges it considerably, so much so that it reaches an area of 110 hectares.

The quality being always so important, it is the best vintages which are selected. In 1957, it is Joseph Henriot, then son of Etienne Henriot, who takes over the House. This last one will take importance because it will acquire several domains such as Bouchard Père & Fils as well as William Fèvre (Burgundy) and Villa Ponciago (Beaujolais).

A unique property

A family-owned and independent estate for over 200 years now, it has 35 hectares of vineyards. Rigorously selected, these parcels are located on the terroirs producing the best grapes: Mareuil and Ay in Grand Cru, Avenay and Épernay in Premier Cru...

But more than a terroir, it is a unique know-how, maintained by 8 generations of winegrowers who are passionate about wine. Today, Alice Tétienne the Cellar Master, maintains with the help of the whole team the vocation of the domain: the constant search for quality.

For this, fabulous grapes of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay shine in the vinifications... It is above all the latter, Chardonnay, that seems to be the backbone of the estate's wines. The house says it itself: it makes its Blanc de Blancs its most personal and most emblematic cuvée.
