The winemaker

The History of Domaine Clavel

Since 1886, Pierre Clavel, son of Jean Clavel, historian of the Languedoc vineyards, has been working as a self-taught winemaker in the Languedoc. He had his first success with his first vintage of Copa Santa, in 1992.

In 1994, Pierre Clavel met Estelle, his future wife. They first settled in Saint Bauzille de Montmel, north of Montpellier, before finding the place of their dreams, the Mas de Périé. Everything had to be built, both in the building and in the fields. It takes two years to shape what will become Domaine Clavel, at the exit of the small village of Assas, on the way to the Pic Saint Loup. In addition to the vineyard, Estelle develops a garden, while Pierre starts breeding.

The succession is already ready, with their two sons, Antoine and Martin, who are ready to take over Domaine Clavel when the time comes. They have studied and traveled in France and around the world to hone their curiosity and bring creativity to the estate. Antoine knows Burgundy and Martin went to see more closely how vines were treated in the antipodes, Australia and New Zealand.

The Domaine Clavel vineyard

While Domaine Clavel is new, it has nonetheless experienced upheaval. Estelle and Pierre have never stopped evolving it, enlarging it, developing the plots and selecting different grape varieties.

The vineyard around Mas de Périé has become a haven for the local wildlife. In addition to the vines, there are olive trees, truffle fields, plots dedicated to market gardening, soft wheat, beehives and flowery fallow land.

The Pic Saint Loup vineyard is located in the middle of fragrant pine woods, with thyme and rosemary growing here and there. The exposure of the plots is perfect, whether on the plain or on the slopes. The soil is composed of calcareous colluvium and scree for the top, clay with small pebbles for the bottom.

The vineyard on the Pic Saint Loup side covers 17 hectares and is run in organic mode. Other crops share the plots, to improve the structure of the soil: triticale wheat, peas and mustard. Since 2016, Domaine Clavel has expanded, with the purchase of the vineyard of Montpeyroux. Leaning on the foothills of Larzac, it benefits from the Mediterranean/Atlantic barrier located only about ten kilometers away, compared to a good forty for the mas. The soil is very chalky and is planted mainly with Grenache.
