The winemaker

The History of the Domaine de Lansac

The Domaine de Lansac owes its name to the hamlet it occupies, at the foot of the Alpilles. The Romans occupied it until the end of their empire, in 480 AD. It was a strategic point to watch over the Domitia road and the traffic that crossed the Durance, but also for the cultivation of the vine that was used to supply the Roman soldiers with wine.

It was then the Visigoths who came to settle, while Lansac was still a port, until the Durance changed its course and changed its bed in 1132. The territory was then reconquered by France.

The Sabran family is one of the oldest dynasties in Provence. Originally from Languedoc, it came to settle in the region in the 13th century. In 1204, the Domaine de Lansac belonged to Rostaing de Sabran, following a treaty signed with Guillaume IV de Forcalquier. 30 years later, the owner had to give it as a pledge to the Templars who converted it into a commandery. After the fall of the order, the Domaine de Lansac knew different owners, before finally returning to the Sabran family in 1816.

It has been managed since 1996 by Éléonore de Sabran-Pontevès.

The Domaine de Lansac vineyard

The Domaine de Lansac vineyard covers 40 hectares in the heart of Provence, between the Rhone and the Alpilles. Established on the hamlet of Lansac, the vineyards are complemented by 20 hectares of land, dedicated to the cultivation of cereals.

The soil of the vineyard is sandy, silty and clayey. It is located in a region rich in biodiversity, preserved by the respectful conduct of the Domaine de Lansac which is now certified organic by the label ECOCERT FR-BIO-01.

Since taking over the estate, Éléonore de Sabran-Pontevès has developed it by bringing in new grape varieties and working on sophisticated blends that produce wines with character.

The grape varieties are diverse, including the typical grape varieties of Provence : Grenache, Carignan, Alicante, Aubun, Cinsault and Aramon. Other grape varieties are Syrah, Merlot, Marselan, Caladoc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon.

Three-quarters of the vines are at least 40 years old.

The "free-standing" vines

The Domaine de Lansac has the particularity of cultivating vines that are "franches de pied". This means that they have not been grafted, unlike almost all the vines, since the phylloxera epidemic at the end of the 19th century. The use of rootstocks, usually of American origin, makes the vines immune to the parasite.

The free standing vines of the Domaine de Lansac represent 9 hectares of the estate. To protect them from phylloxera, they are flooded every year for 40 days in winter. This singularity guarantees the production of original wines.
