Domaine de la Citadelle

3.8
(15 customer reviews)
Yves Rousset-Rouard bought Domaine la Citadelle in the Lubéron in 1989. At the time, it was an old farmhouse surrounded by a few hectares of vines. With the aim of producing great wines in all three colors, the family subsequently acquired further land, all of which showed great promise. The vineyard now covers 39 hectares and is run by Yves's son, Alexis. Find out more

The winemaker

A great terroir

Near the village of Ménerbes, the estate stretches along the northern slopes of the Lubéron mountains, with land up to 300 meters above sea level. The vineyard comprises 74 plots and covers two appellations. The Luberon AOC covers 29 hectares and the Vaucluse vins de pays covers around ten hectares.

It boasts a wide variety of exposures, but also of soils: marl, sandy-clay, chalky-clay or stony scree. The region's climate is highly favorable to vines, and a major restructuring of the grape varieties has been carried out to improve their quality.

Grenache and Syrah are the mainstays of the vineyard, with other varieties such as Viognier, Roussanne, Cinsault and Mourvèdre having been introduced since the Rousset Rouard family acquired the estate. Today, 14 grape varieties are planted on the estate.

Environmentally-friendly practices

The vineyard is run using integrated farming methods, with no chemical inputs, pesticides, fertilizers or weedkillers. The team is constantly striving to improve its knowledge of the needs of the soil, the vines and the particularities of the terroirs.

Domaine de la citadelle obtained organic certification in 2016. Work is deliberately aimed at limiting yields in order to enhance quality. Each plot of land is carefully considered in order to adapt the work to its specific characteristics.

The winery is built on the natural slope of the hill. As a result, all operations, from grape reception to bottling, are carried out by gravity.

The wines of Domaine de la Citadelle

Gouverneur Saint Auban rouge 2019 en AOP Lubéron is made from the best terroirs in the vineyard, a blend of mostly Syrah and 10% Grenache. It's a well-balanced, rich, deep wine with great ageing potential and a beautiful ruby color.

Les Artèmes blanc 2019 is AOP Lubéron, a fresh, structured wine with fruity notes and fine ageing potential. The nose is complex and intense, with aromas of apricots, pears and vine peaches.

Court métrage Rosé 2018 is an indulgent, fresh and round wine with a pale, sparkling color. The "Court Métrage" cuvées are available in all three colors.

Le Châtaignier is an AOP Lubéron rosé made from a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 30% Cinsault. It's a harmonious, expressive wine with great freshness and luscious aromas of spices, flowers and fruit.
