Château Montus

3.9
(49 customer reviews)
Château Montus is located in the southwestern region of France, near the cities of Pau and Tarbes, facing the Pyrenees. It belongs to the vineyards of Alain Brumont, who also owns the Bouscassé estate. The ensemble covers 180 hectares. The estate is relatively recent, but the winemaker has undertaken a major work to redevelop each parcel by scrupulously selecting the grape varieties. The wines are in the Madiran, Pacherenc du Vic Bilh and Vin de Pays des Côtes de Gascogne appellations. Find out more

The winemaker

The History of Chateau Montus

Alain Brumont acquired Château Montus in 1980, on a terroir where the cultivation of vines dates back to the 18th century. The soil has a high proportion of large reddish pebbles that attest to the formation of the Pyrenees 40 million years ago. Thanks to the hard work of Alain Brumont, his Madiran Château Montus is now renowned in France, as well as internationally.

The terroir of Château Montus

The terroir of Chateau Montus is distinguished by its very steep slopes, ranging from 20 to 40%, facing south. Its subsoil is made up of red and yellow clays. The Tyre, another part of the terroir, has a south-western exposure, which gives it a milder sunshine. On the other hand, it is windier than Montus.

The three grape varieties of Château Montus

Tannat competes with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot from Bordeaux, Pinot from Burgundy and Syrah from the northern Côtes du Rhône. This grape variety is the most suitable for ageing wines. Its fruit provides depth, as well as powerful fruit flavors.

Petit Manseng brings an acidity that enhances the wines. It gives them a touch of originality and complexity, while maintaining a beautiful harmony.

The Petit Courbu competes with the whites of Burgundy, Alsace or the Loire. It brings to the wine fatness and unctuousness, as well as freshness.

Some Chateau Montus wines

La Tyre - Madiran

La Tyre is a red wine made from the Tannat grape. It is a rich and deep wine, complex and concentrated. Its tannins are fine and its mouth is elegant. It goes well with black Bigorre pork, ribs on the bone, as well as all rich cuisines.

Château Montus XL - Madiran

Château Montus XL is a red wine made with Tannat. The nose is very deep, with scents of cigar, mocha, oak tar, balsamic and marquetry. The Château Montus XL goes well with prime rib, hare à la royale and all game in general.

Château Montus Prestige - Madiran

Château Montus Prestige is made from 30-year-old Tannat. Its atypical character gives it an unusual amplitude. Its fruitiness is discreet, but nevertheless complex. This rich and opulent red wine is wonderful with red meats and chocolate desserts.

Château Montus Blanc Sec - Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh

Château Montus Blanc Sec is made with Petit Courbu and Petit Manseng grapes, chosen from 30 years old vines. The wine benefits from the fatness of Petit Courbu and the minerality of Petit Manseng. It is long and voluminous in the mouth, always fresh. Château Montus Blanc Sec goes well with fish, such as sea bass or turbot, and white meats.
