The winemaker

Domaine Jean Foillard is one of the great names in Beaujolais. The winemaker, who has become a status symbol in the region, joined the family estate in the early '80s with the simple idea of making good, natural wines, unafraid to break the mould. He works the estate's eight small hectares in such a way as to develop the fruit and velvety softness in the glass. His recipe: low-temperature maceration of the bunches, and precise work on the vines. These have clay-limestone soils, except for the sublime Côte du Py parcel, which is on schist soil: this has an effect on the vines, enabling the roots to grow deeper, increasing the contact surface between the plant and the soil, and conferring minerality and greater complexity. This has earned the côte de Py cuvée consistently excellent scores from critics, such as this 94/100 from robert parker on the 2017 cuvée. The classic Mogon cuvée, on the other hand, is simpler but more affordable, making it possible to enjoy the estate's nectar at more affordable prices. Indeed, over the years, the prices of these wines have risen considerably, as have those of Marcel Lapierre and other famous Beaujolais neighbors. The price of excellence!
